Bob
Davis
Bob Davis has long been closely
associated with the International Aerobatic Club and the U.S.
Aerobatic Team as both a competitor and advisor. He
retired from commercial aviation in 1993 as a Boeing 747 captain
to work full time as an air show performer. That year, he
purchased what many consider to be the ultimate showplane, the
Russian-built Sukhoi Su-29.
Bob flew competition from
1970-88; won the Illinois Aerobatic Championships; placed second
at the International Aerobatic Championships in Fond du Lac, WI
a number of times, and third at the National Championships;
was selected to fly on the U.S. Aerobatic Team in 1975, '77 and
'84, and returned in '84, '85 and '89 as an advisor.
THE
PLANE
The Russian-built Sukhoi is in a class by itself. Since it
was first introduced at the World Aerobatic Championships in
1984, the nine-cylinder, Su-29 has won more than 100 first place
finishes in international competition. Boasting strength,
quickness and maneuverability unmatched by any other aerobatic
plane, the Su-29 produces a phenomenal roll rate of over 360
degrees per second.
