EAA AirVenture's cinema provides a relaxing way to spend a day

Attendees at EAA AirVenture can take a rest from sky gazing and walking by relaxing in the Flying Cinema, located near the NASA pavilion and the homebuilt area.

The Flying Cinema offers a classic collection of aviation videos ranging from rare historical footage to documentaries and films of aircraft construction, combat, engineering, and aviation stories.

Admission to all the films is included with regular EAA AirVenture admission.  The current lineup includes:


  • 12:00 – 12:30
    The History of Seaplanes –
    Ever wonder who was the first to fly on floats? This video answers that question and many others, while chronicling the history of floatplane flying.
  • 12:30-1:00
    Flying the Spirit, "In the Cockpit" – The third of EAA’s in the cockpit series tells the story of the Spirit of St. Louis, and Charles Lindbergh, with Historical footage along with replicas.
  • 1:00-1:30
    Aerocar: Giving the Automobile its Wings --
    This video features rare test flight footage, interviews, scale models, drawings, significant photographs and press clippings of all four models of the AEROCAR.
  • 1:30-3:00
    Building the Voyager – This film gives a detailed look at one of the great aeronautical achievements of all time, the Voyager, through the designing, building and testing stages.

    It’s Gotta be a Jenny –
    Take a fascinating look at the history of the Curtiss "Jenny” with rare footage from the Jenny's earliest days as a military trainer and barnstormer.
  • 9:30-10:30
    World War I Aviation –
    Includes The Red Baron in this black-and-white film, which visits with the "aces" of World War I, including Bishop, Rickenbacher and Newberg.
  • 10:30-11:00
    EAA Museum, Experience the Spirit of Flight – Experience the Spirit of Flight in the world's best aviation museum. From homebuilts and ultra lights to antiques and air racers. Discover the aircraft and displays that make the EAA AirVenture Museum unique.
  • 11:00-12:00
    Eagle Hangar Showcase
    – Opened in 1989 at the EAA Air Adventure Museum, the Eagle Hangar is dedicated to the men, women, and aircraft that served during World War II.
  • 12:00-1:00
    Tribute to "The Few" "Their Finest Hour" – It was spring 1940. As the might of the German armies and air fleets gathered along the Channel coast, all that stood between them and overwhelming victory was the thick blue line of the RAF's fighter squadrons. This video sets the scene for this historic air battle and highlights the nation's celebration of the 50th anniversary of his great victory in 1990.

    Built for Speed –
    The Golden Age of Air Racing comes alive in this exciting retrospective of the annual National Air Races of the 1930s. Witness the famous Bendix cross-country and Thompson closed-course contests, where speed and distance records were set throughout the Depression era.

    Memphis Belle- a story of the Flying Fortress – The original Memphis Belle documentary, filmed during combat conditions, tells the story of a 10-man B-17 crew as they prepare to fly and return from their 25th combat mission - the first crew to accomplish such a feat.

    Hook Down, Wheels Down –
    Re-live the Battle of the Coral Sea with America's biggest World War II carriers in this video that features the Wildcat, Dauntless, Avenger and Hellcat.

    Pearl Harbor to Tokyo – Take a look back at Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle Raiders' famous raid on Tokyo.
  • 11:30-12:00
    Stealth Revealed; A Visit to EAA Oshkosh & Beyond – One of the first major public showings of the US Air Force F117-A "Stealth" fighter came during EAA Oshkosh '90 with an exclusive interview with Capt. Rob Donaldson.

    Magnificent Desolation, To the Moon – It is perhaps the crowning technological achievement in history: the Apollo missions. Hear the astronauts describe each mission.

    Sport Flying 8 (715 and 716) – Balloon ride with Pete Conrad, handle wake turbulence from Patty Wagstaff, explore the exciting new world of powered parachutes with Pete Conrad and Tom Poberezny. Aviation photography tips you can use at your next airshow, chilling story of Apollo 13, a brief look at rotorcraft.

    Sport Aviation 19 (819 and 820) – Speedvision's second annual special devoted to EAA AirVenture including coverage of the homebuilt, ultralight, and rotorcraft designs...the latest vintage and Warbird restorations...and of course, the best air show on the planet!
  • 1:45-2:45
    Sport Aviation 28 (911 and 912) – The largest Stearman gathering in the country and they're all here: a crop duster, a trainer and plenty of other restorations like a Percival Provost.
  • 2:45-3:45
    Sport Aviation 38 (935 and 936) – A 1999 video showcasing 70 Years of Pietenpol Air Campers, airshow performers like Rocky Hill, a profile of the Dehavilland Leopard Moth and Burt Rutan's newest revelation, the Proteus, which is to be used as an "atmospheric satellite.”

    Sport Flying 4 (707 and 708) – Go for a ride on a P-51 with Paul Poberezny and Pete Conrad, WWII WASPs and Tom Poberezny on the importance of air shows and discussion on Recreational Pilot License. In addition, witness human travel to the moon on the voyage of Apollo 8 with host Pete Conrad and many other stories.
