Bernice "Bee" Haydu, member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and a scheduled speaker at AirVenture this year, was among three WASP attending a special Oval Office ceremony on July 1. President Barack Obama signed S.614, a bill that awards the Congressional Gold Medal to WASP members, recognizing the more than 1,000 women who served and provided vital service to their nation during World War II. The WASP pilots primarily flew vital, non-combat military missions during the war. EAA strongly supported the bill.

The invitation to participate in the ceremony came by phone while Haydu was en route to Florida after participating in the recent Air Classic Race. She was asked if she could be in Washington, D.C., the next afternoon for the bill signing. "I was one of three WASP witnessing this, and getting the pen," said Haydu. "What a thrill."

Haydu will speak at Oshkosh about her book, Letters Home 1944-1945, at the Poly Fiber Pavilion on July 27, from 4-5:15 p.m. She will also appear at Author's Corner in the Wearhouse to sign book copies on July 29 and August 1, from 10:30-11:15 a.m.

FUTURE AIRVENTURE DATES: 2014: July 28-Aug. 3; 2015: July 20-26; 2016: July 25-31; 2017: July 24-30
