1936 Waco YKS-6

1939 Fairchild F-24

More and more interesting airplanes continue to be added to EAA's first Spirit of Aviation Aircraft Auction, scheduled for AirVenture Saturday, July 31, at EAA's Jack Mark Hangar just north of Runway 9/27 at Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh. Recent additions include two special vintage aircraft from the 1930s - a 1939 Fairchild F-24 and a 1936 Waco YKS-6.

What makes the restored Fairchild unique is its original owner - silent movie star and band leader Charles "Buddy" Rogers, who starred in the first Academy Award winning movie, Wings. Rogers was also married to Mary Pickford, a.k.a. America's Sweetheart.

The Waco, originally built for the Socony-Vacuum Oil Co. (Standard Oil Company of New York, forerunner of Mobil and later ExxonMobil), won the Judges Trophy at AirVenture 2009's Seaplane Base (it includes the floats) plus took home EAA's Silver Age - Outstanding Closed Cockpit Biplane award the previous year. The airplane also was a participant in the 2008 American Barnstormers Tour.

The total number of airplanes registered as of this week is 22. To see them all, including detailed descriptions, specifications, etc, visit www.airventure.org/auction and click on the "Buyer's" link. The auction is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. Potential buyers and sellers can also register at the website. Consignment slots are limited so don't delay!

FUTURE AIRVENTURE DATES: 2014: July 28-Aug. 3; 2015: July 20-26; 2016: July 25-31; 2017: July 24-30
