The only flying Supermarine Seafire XV will be AirVenture this year. The airplane, owned by Dr. Wes "Doc" Stricker is one of only four known Seafires to exist in the world. The Seafire is the naval version of the Supermarine Spitfire, adapted to operate off of aircraft carriers. Its mission was primarily as a short range interceptor.
The airplane, restored by Jim Cooper, was retired from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1950, and has never been flown under civilian ownership until it made its first post-restoration flight on July 1.
This Seafire XV has never been on public display since its military service. It has not so much as graced a static display, until AirVenture 2010. John Beattie will be flying the Seafire to Oshkosh on July 20, and the plane will be displayed the entire week.
