Quicksilver will be saluted in the Ultralight Area.

The Ultralight Area at EAA AirVenture, famously dubbed "The Farm," will feature a number of new highlights and attractions at AirVenture 2011.

The area, located at the south end of the flightline, has always been one of AirVenture's best kept secrets, according to Timm Bogenhagen, senior technical aviation specialist at EAA who is based at the Ultralight area during AirVenture.

"Ultralight pilots love to fly for fun. Having our own runway allows us to fly our ultralights at the world's largest fly-in," Bogenhagen said. "Spectators love to stand along the flightline or sit in the bleachers and watch the short takeoff and landing performance of ultralights."

This year, the area will celebrate one of the most prominent manufacturers of ultralight aircraft during the Salute to Quicksilver event. Quicksilver has sold more ultralight aircraft than any other manufacturer, Bogenhagen said.

"We want the owners of all different types of Quicksilver aircraft to bring them to the Ultralight area this year. It's a great way for Quicksilver enthusiasts to interact with and celebrate this iconic brand," he said.

Traditionally, morning and evening flight operations on the 1,200-foot grass runway adjacent to the Ultralight Red Barn have been a signature event. Aviation enthusiasts can see ultralights, powered parachutes, weight shift trikes, homebuilt helicopters, and gyroplanes demonstrating "low and slow" flying.

This year, ultralight visitors can expect a variety of events and activities, new and traditional. Some highlights include:

  • Homebuilt helicopter and gyroplane flights from 12-3 p.m. daily
  • Ultralight and light plane flying from 7 a.m. to noon and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily
  • Salute to Quicksilver celebration
  • Hot air balloon launch at 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 30
  • Dozens of ultralight manufacturer exhibits daily
  • Ultralight party featuring a pig roast in the nature center on Saturday night - tickets available in the Ultralight Red Barn
  • Tethered hot air balloon flights daily (weather permitting)
  • Separate Ultralight campground where pilots can camp next to their aircraft
  • A special area for EAA Ultralight chapters to promote their activities
  • Technical forums
  • Stewart Systems covering demonstrations

Hop on an AirVenture tram and head to the south end of the flightline to enjoy this great segment of aviation.
