Having made its 23rd and final flight last week, Sikorsky Aircraft's award-winning X2 Technology demonstrator was officially retired - spare one final appearance at AirVenture 2011. The X2, which features twin coaxial counter-rotating main rotors and a pusher propeller, set an unofficial speed record of 253 knots in level flight on September 10, 2010, a milestone that earned it the 2010 Robert J. Collier Trophy from the National Aeronautic Association. The general public's only chance to see it will be here next week.
Sikorsky will now transition to the S-97 Raider helicopter program to design, build, and fly two prototype light tactical helicopters for evaluation by the U.S. military for a variety of combat missions.
The X2 and Project Firefly, an all-electric helicopter technology demonstrator, will be on display at the Sikorsky exhibit, located at booths 379-380 and 385-386 near ConocoPhillips Plaza.
