More than 50 Zenith aircraft and many more Zenith owners and builders will convene at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2011 to celebrate the company’s airplanes and honor the man who created them.

Chris Heintz, founder and chief engineer of Zenair Ltd., has designed and developed more than 12 aircraft models that have been marketed as kit aircraft around the world. More than 800 aircraft — including the STOL CH 701, Zodiac CH 601, CH 650 LS and LSi, STOL CH 801, Zodiac XL, STOL CH 750 light-sport utility kit airplane, and CH 2000—are presently flying in 48 different countries.

According to Joe Scheibinger, a 601 builder/owner from Oshkosh, 32 Zenith airplanes have reserved a spot in Zenith showplane parking. However, more than 50 Zenith planes are expected to be here when you include the Zenith planes camping or on display.

Heintz will be honored at 10 a.m. Monday during a special presentation in the ConocoPhillips Plaza. Each of his aircraft designs will be on hand for the ceremony, and a special homebuilt review will follow.

A longtime EAA member, Heintz will again be honored Wednesday during the Zenith Builders Banquet at the EAA Nature Center. Cocktails start at 6:30 p.m. with dinner following at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the banquet are $20. While 155 had pre-registered for the dinner as of Friday, tickets can still be purchased in the Zenith display booth, located in the homebuilders section just north of the Brown Arch, until noon Wednesday or until they are sold out.

According to Scheibinger, people from all over the world are coming to honor Heintz, including pilots from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and China. An Army major serving his country in Afghanistan is even planning to come to Oshkosh on his leave.
