B-29 Superfortress, “FIFI”, Commemorative Air Force units from throughout the United States will be bringing a total of 11 legendary aircraft that will be part of the air shows and ground displays in the Warbirds area. Among them will be one of the world’s three airworthy Japanese Zeros, courtesy of the CAF Southern California Wing.

This 560 A6M3 Model 22 Zero was recovered from Babo in New Guinea in 1991, partially restored from several A6M3s in Russia, then brought to the United States for completion of the restoration.

Currently, this aircraft has a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engine (compared to the original Sakai engine in the Planes of Fame Museum’s flyable A6M5 Zero).

The Southern California Wing also recently announced it would also bring the P-51D Mustang Man O War to Oshkosh this year.

Other planes from the CAF collection appearing this year include the following:

  • SB2C Helldiver – West Texas Wing, Midland, Texas
  • P-51 Red Nose – Dixie Wing, Peachtree City, Georgia
  • P-51 Gunfighter – Great Plains Wing, Council Bluff, Iowa
  • P-51 Tuskegee Airmen – Minnesota Wing, South St. Paul, Minnesota
  • SBD Dauntless – Dixie Wing, Peachtree City, Georgia
  • F6F Hellcat – Southern California Wing, Camarillo, California
  • PT-26 – Wisconsin Wing, West Bend, Wisconsin
  • B-29 “FIFI” – B-29/B-24 Squadron, Addison, Texas
  • AT-6 – West Houston Squadron, Houston, Texas
