EAA AirVenture 2012 is just about seven weeks away, and we're starting to see more and more confirmations of special aircraft planning to be here. One of the most significant of those is definitely on the smaller side; the "original" airplane Dick Van Grunsven designed and designated the RV-1 will arrive in style on opening day Monday, July 23.

The airplane, originally a Stits Playboy, was modified by Van more than 40 years ago with a new cantilever wing, canopy, cowling, and other mods. The public charity Friends of the RV-1, which restored the aircraft, is donating the RV-1 to EAA so all can see it prominently displayed at the EAA AirVenture Museum.

The airplane is currently making its way around the United States on a tour that began at Sun 'n Fun in April. It has since flown up the East Coast, over the border to and across Canada, and back down across the West Coast. Soon the RV-1 will be making its way back eastward from Oregon to Oshkosh for its official opening day arrival at Phillips 66 Plaza, scheduled for 2:45 p.m. right before the air show. (Time subject to change due to weather.)

The RV-1 will lead a parade of all RV models produced by the company over the years, with a special fly-by tribute from the RV formation group Falcon Flight. EAA President/CEO Rod Hightower will be on hand to accept the keys to the historic aircraft and host a brief ceremony dedicating the airplane as it makes its permanent home in the cradle of homebuilt aviation, Oshkosh.

EAA has designated AirVenture opening day as A Tribute to Van's Aircraft (Dick Van Grunsven) Day and will have a number of activities planned Monday and throughout the week centered on the RV, among them: Van has a special appearance at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Theater in the Woods; the Team RV formation group will perform throughout the week; and the airplane that started it all - the RV-1 - will be the featured airplane in the Homebuilders Hangar on Tuesday morning.

Advance purchase tickets are available online, with discounted pricing ending on June 15.
