The rare Junkers JU 52 tri-motor airplane scheduled to attend AirVenture this year has begun its trans-Atlantic journey to North America, and plane sponsor RIMOWA is tracking its progress online. The airplane's North American tour includes two Oshkosh stops - the first set to occur next Thursday, June 28, at Wittman Regional Airport before proceeding to the West Coast.

The airplane will then make its way back to Oshkosh, expected to arrive on July 13 and remain here for the duration of AirVenture, which takes place July 23-29.

"For me, this is a very special challenge," said RIMOWA CEO Dieter Morszeck, who will be on board the JU 52 for the flight from Europe. "Crossing the Atlantic aboard the good old Auntie JU is something I never would have dreamed of. But now, the time has come! We're all very excited and highly anticipating this extraordinary flight."

The aircraft was manufactured in 1939 and is the first passenger-certified JU 52 to fly this route since 1937, according to RIMOWA. The flight originated in Leverkusen, Germany. During AirVenture, visitors can see the airplane displayed on Phillips 66 Plaza, as well as tour the aircraft. It will fly during several of the daily air shows as well.

FUTURE AIRVENTURE DATES: 2014: July 28-Aug. 3; 2015: July 20-26; 2016: July 25-31; 2017: July 24-30
