July 9, 2013 - The list of registered aircraft participating in EAA's first Return of Champions at AirVenture 2013 has swelled to 73, as the deadline to register approaches this Friday, July 12.
The Return of Champions is a weeklong celebration of Gold and Silver Lindy winners from the past several decades, signifying Grand Champions and Reserve Grand Champions judged the best of the best by EAA aircraft judges.
Those who register by Friday will receive a complimentary weekly wristband, special display signage, and a commemorative plaque. And you don't need to have been owner of the aircraft when it won its Lindy to be eligible. Register now
Homebuilt fixed-wing aircraft lead the way so far with 30 registered returning champion airplanes - from Christopher Gardner's Silver Lindy winning 1963 Butler Midget Mustang awarded in 1965, to Andy Werback's 2012 Gold Lindy Lancair Legacy that was completed in 2010.
Thus far 26 vintage planes have been registered, from a 1932 WACO QDC owned by Alan Buchner, Silver Lindy winner in 1996, to Roger Florkiewicz's 1968 Piper PA28R-180, which flew away with a Gold Lindy in 2010.
Ten ultralights, seven warbirds, four rotorcraft, and three seaplanes round out the total thus far.
Many of these aircraft will be spotlighted in daily aerial performances and special parking displays on Phillips 66 Plaza, as well as in their respective areas. Phillips 66 Plaza will also host daily special Champions in Review sessions featuring select champions from each category and their owners discussing aircraft history, the build project, restoration, and more.
