Guide to Site Changes
The changes you’ll see at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009.

Changes will be evident at this year’s event in all of the following areas:

The main gateMain Gate
The main gate has been moved west roughly 400 feet from its previous site, and the admissions buildings and assistance center have been repositioned in this new configuration.

The repositioning of the Main Gate accommodated the extension of the main aircraft display taxiway, "Celebration Way," which leads to AeroShell Square. The two new thoroughfares that branch out diagonally from the new main gate will make getting around on foot much more efficient. One of those diagonal streets cuts its way to the northeast toward the Forums area. The other new diagonal street flows to the southeast to a point behind Exhibit Hangar D, ending at the "Paul's Woods" neighborhood of Camp Scholler.

Restricted Vehicles Zone
A new, restricted-vehicle zone has been added to the site for 2009. It is defined, in part, by the placement of the new diagonal roadways. In this area — which will include Aeroshell Square, EAA Member Square, the main outdoor exhibit areas, and the indoor exhibit hangars — the number and types of vehicles allowed in high foot-traffic thoroughfares will be significantly reduced. These vehicle restrictions and improved tram schedules will allow visitors to move about more efficiently and freely in the exhibit areas and show-center “heart” of the site.

New Building Locations
About a dozen buildings were relocated for 2009. You may also refer to the visitor site map and key for a guide to building locations:

New buildingsA - Main Gate: admissions buildings have been moved further west as described in the section above.

B - EAA Chapters HQ: has been relocated to Knapp Street Road near the intersection of Waukau just north of the new FAA control tower.

C - Young Eagles: has been relocated to Knapp Street Road near the intersection of Waukau just north of the new FAA control tower.

D - Lost & Found and Information: has been relocated to the southwest of the Sky Shoppe adjacent to the location of the old FAA control tower.

E - Local Area Tourism and Housing: has been relocated to just inside the Main Gate.

F - International Aerobatic Club (IAC): building has been relocated to the south about 150 yards, adjacent to Aeroshell Square headquarters.

G - Sweepstakes building: has been relocated to EAA Member Square just west of the EAA Welcome Center.

H - Outdoor Exhibit Office: has been relocated to the new location of the Fly Market just south of Exhibit Hangar D.

I - Post Office and Office Max: have been relocated to the north side of Exhibit Hangar C.

J - Main Aircraft Registration: building has been eliminated and registration services will be handled at Homebuilders Headquarters, IAC Headquarters, and at Show Plane Registration.

K - Partner Resource Center: supporting EAA business partners and advertisers, has been combined into one building and relocated just to the east of its past location.

L - New Building: the Vintage Aircraft Association (VAA) has constructed a new “Vintage Hangar” located just to the south of the VAA Red Barn.

M - Protect Our Planes (POP) Headquarters and the Commemorative Souvenir Program distribution building: have been relocated to an area just east of the B Lot off of the northern diagonal road.

Fly Market and Aeromart
Member survey data showed that the greatest use of the Fly Market was by people who camped in Camp Scholler, so the Fly Market has been moved adjacent to Camp Scholler just to the southwest of Exhibit Hangar D. The Aeromart tent has also been relocated to this area as well as the Outdoor Exhibit Office (at the location of the ATM — the dollar sign — symbol on the master site map).

Tram Routes and Parking
For 2009, the number of trams in the north (Red) and central (Yellow) routes has been increased. The Yellow route (central) has also been expanded into a loop to accommodate the new site layout. These slightly modified tram routes should reduce waiting times at each tram stop.

In addition, visitors who would like to take in the Seaplane Base will now be able to catch a bus at the expanded Bus Park just west of Forest Home Avenue and Waukau Avenue.

AirVenture visitors who arrive by car will park in the same lots that they used in previous years. In the Orange Lot, attendees will be parking on the west end of the lot first and a shuttle bus will be provided to take people to the Main Gate. Shuttle buses will also transport visitors from the Brown Lot (at the museum) to the Main Gate. If auto parking shifts to the outer Grey Lot, shuttle buses will also be available to provide transportation to the Main Gate.

The Exhibitor D Lot has been eliminated. Exhibitors who parked in the D Lot will now park in the B Lot and a shuttle will be provided from the B Lot to the exhibits area.

New for 2009: The bus to the Seaplane Base will depart from and return to the Bus Park off Forest Home Avenue and Waukau Avenue.

New Amenities
Flush toiletsFlush Toilets: New for 2009, flush toilet facilities have been placed in strategic locations on the grounds. Visitors will find them located near the main Exhibit Hangars, Forums Plaza, and Theater in the Woods. In addition, more flush toilets are now installed in the campgrounds as part of the refurbished shower facilities (see below).

Upgraded Campground Amenities: The four major campground shower buildings — Bunkhouse, West, Stits, and North Forty — have been renovated and now include dozens of new flush toilet facilities.

Shade and Rest Areas: More than 40 mature trees were transplanted and dozens of new trees were brought in to establish several shady green spaces where attendees can take a break from the sun. In addition, hundreds of new umbrellas will help cover rest and dining areas, providing additional shade and green spaces. Shady areas are clearly marked on the master site map.

Dining Locations
EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009 will see the expansion of food-service offerings. Several food areas were repositioned during the site changes:

  • A newly-added food service area will be at the intersection of Waukau Avenue and Knapp Street Road, kitty-corner from the new FAA control tower.
  • Another new food service location was added near the new location of the Fly Market.
  • The most noticeable change in food service is a new evening dining experience that will replace the former Park Café, just south of VAA Red Barn. This new facility will offer upscale fare for meals and celebrations after the air show. Guests will be able to sit and relax while discussing the day's events and preparing for the evening entertainment opportunities at AirVenture.
Dining locations are noted on the master site map.

Wayfinding Towers
Here's something new you probably won’t miss: AirVenture 2009 will see the addition of four 50-foot-tall wayfinding towers in strategic positions to help visitors navigate the vast grounds. The towers are located in certain special interest "neighborhoods" — Warbirds, Homebuilts, Vintage/Showplanes, and Ultralight/Lightplane.

These "home bases" will provide additional distribution points for AirVenture Today, and include you-are-here maps, daily schedules and events, and not-to-miss attractions.

To further help visitors find their way this year, the volunteer Protect Our Planes (POP) Corps will broaden its efforts to include providing directions and guidance throughout the site. Some of these volunteers will be stationed at the wayfinding towers and others will roam the grounds. Look for the blue-vested information volunteers.

EAA Member Square
Just west of Aeroshell Square, at the intersection of Celebration Way and Knapp Street Road, is EAA Member Square. For 2009, the EAA Sweepstakes building has been relocated to the corner formerly occupied by Flying Magazine. These "four corners" now include all EAA-related components: the EAA Welcome Center, the NAFI/EAA Learn to Fly Discovery Center (and new location of NAFI Flight Instructor Headquarters), EAA Merchandise Tent, and the Share the Spirit Sweepstakes Building.

Finding Information
AirVenture Today, the official daily publication of the convention, has been reinvented this year to be the "go-to" guide for all things AirVenture. Two pull-out-and-save sections will be included in each daily paper replacing the Info Guide from years past and providing more information to help you plan your AirVenture experience.

One pull-out-and-save section will feature an exhibitor listing and maps of all exhibitor locations including the four indoor exhibit hangars.

The other pull-out-and-save section will include presentations, programs, and daily highlights for the current day—plus information to help visitors plan the next day—and will feature a site map for easy reference.

How to find exhibitors and schedules: One of the most frequently asked questions from visitors is how to find specific exhibitors:

  • The main exhibitor areas — indoor and outdoor — are indicated on the site map, and additional you-are-here site maps will be located around the grounds as well as at the base of each of the four wayfinding towers.
  • Each day, AirVenture Today will feature two pull-out-and-save sections featuring exhibitor listings and maps of all exhibitor locations as well as daily events and presentation schedules.
  • New for 2009! For visitors with Internet access, or for those using the Internet Café in the EAA Welcome Center, exhibitor listings and locations are also available online at www.AirVenture.org/exhibitors. In addition, EAA Aviators Marketplace Kiosks will be available at several locations around the site and in the four main indoor Exhibit Hangars, which will provide the capability to look-up specific vendors exhibiting at AirVenture.
  • Also, for visitors with Internet access, or for those using the Internet Café in the EAA Welcome Center, all speakers, forums, workshops, book signings, attractions schedules, and more can be found online at www.AirVenture.org/shedule.
